I’ve always said that Johannesburg has an energy you can’t find anywhere else in the world, and nowhere is that more obvious than Gold Reef City. Stepping into this massive theme park feels like walking onto a 19th-century gold rush movie set—if that movie set also featured some of the most terrifyingly brilliant roller coasters on the continent.
As a self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie, my first stop was the infamous Anaconda. Feeling the G-force pin me to my seat as we inverted over the park was an absolute rush. But what makes this place special is how it balances heart-stopping thrills with genuine heritage. After catching my breath, I descended 75 meters underground into an authentic, decommissioned 19th-century gold mine shaft. Walking through the cool, dark tunnels where miners once struck it rich gave me a whole new appreciation for the history of “The City of Gold.”
By the afternoon, I watched the park transform into a family paradise. From the classic carousel to the roaring water rapids, the laughter of kids filled the air.
- The Damage: Standard general admission tickets start around R175 to R260 per person depending on the rider tier (with great discounts if you hold a Tsogo Sun Rewards card). Parking is a flat R20.
- The Verdict: It’s an absolute bargain for a full day of world-class entertainment. If you are in Gauteng and want a mix of rich history and pure thrill, this is your ultimate day out.
