There is a distinct warmth to Durban that goes far beyond the weather. It’s in the Indian Ocean breeze, the friendly smiles of the locals, and the rich aroma of spices wafting from the beachfront food stalls. On my latest coastal escape, I spent a day tracking the vibrant soul of the Golden Mile.

My morning began with a brisk walk along the promenade, watching surfers catch early waves as the sun turned the ocean into liquid gold. But the true highlight was exploring uShaka Marine World. Stepping inside their iconic Shipwreck Aquarium—the seventh largest aquarium in the world—felt like discovering a hidden underwater kingdom. I found myself standing inches away from massive ragged-tooth sharks, completely mesmerized by their quiet power.

You cannot visit Durban without eating a proper, authentic Bunny Chow (hollowed-out white bread filled to the brim with steaming, fragrant curry). I grabbed one from a local spot right on the beachfront, sitting on the sand with the spicy gravy dripping down my fingers. It’s messy, it’s spicy, and it is absolute perfection.

  • The Damage: Entrance to the uShaka Shipwreck Aquarium is incredibly reasonable at R126 per person (adults and kids alike). If you want an extra thrill, you can add an Ocean Walker experience for R195 or a Shark Dive for R213. As for lunch? A massive, belly-filling quarter-mutton bunny chow will only set you back about R80 to R110.
  • The Verdict: Durban offers world-class coastal beauty and rich culture without the premier price tag. It’s vibrant, affordable, and effortlessly cool.
